South Bend Drywall Pros tapes and finishes new drywall, and matches or removes the texture on walls that are already up. Every quote names a finish level from the industry standard, because two bids for "finishing" can describe different amounts of work. Most rooms get Level 4. A long hallway with a window at the far end, or a dark satin wall, gets skimmed to Level 5.

Drywall finishing can be considered a true art form. There are different levels of finish, all the way up to a Level 5 finish, where you can walk down a hallway with shiny paint on the walls and not see any seams or ripples.
Paper tape set into a bed of compound along the flat joints and inside corners. A fill coat over it, then a finish coat, each one feathered past the last. If the painters are booked for Monday, the tape coat can be hot mud, which hardens by chemical reaction and ignores the humidity. Done right, that is Level 4. Most painted rooms need nothing more.
Level 5 Skim Coat
A thin film of compound across every inch of the wall, paper and seams alike, once Level 4 is done. It gives the paint one surface to soak into. It belongs on walls where daylight runs down their length or where the paint has a sheen. A skim will not straighten a wavy wall. That gets fixed a level earlier.
Texture Matching
Knockdown and orange peel are the sprayed textures people ask about most. We shoot a trial patch on a scrap of board and let it dry. Painted, it goes up against the old wall in daylight. The hopper gets adjusted until the scrap disappears. With knockdown, timing counts as much as the tip. Flatten the spatter too early and it smears.
Sanding and the Light Check
Sanding is quick. Finding what sanding missed takes longer. We hold a bright work lamp flat to the wall and sweep it along each joint, which picks out ridges and tool marks the ceiling fixture hides. The Gypsum Association calls raking side light like that critical lighting. A low winter sun through a west window is the same test, so we run it before you do.
How We Finish Drywall
A finish gets judged in one place, under paint, in the light your room actually gets.
Agree on the level. GA-214, the gypsum industry’s finish standard, runs from Level 0, bare board, up to Level 5. We ask what paint is going on and where the windows are, then write the level into the quote.
Bed the tape. Paper tape goes into a layer of compound on the flat joints and inside corners. Butt joints get feathered much wider.
Fill and finish. Two more coats, each feathered past the one under it. USG puts its all-purpose compound at about 24 hours to dry at 70 F and 70% humidity.
Sand and light. Pole sander first, then a lamp held low along the wall.
Prime all of it. Paper and compound drink paint differently. Skip the primer and the seams show as dull or shiny stripes, which painters call flashing.
Under GA-214, Level 4 suits flat paint and light texture, and Level 5 adds a thin coat of compound over the whole surface for raking light and paint with a sheen. We choose the level by the paint and the light in the room, and the quote names it.
Finishing Drywall in South Bend
Although the South Bend area has 126.4 days a year that reach 32 degrees or colder, finishing drywall is okay as long as there is heat in the house or a heater can be put in the area. Even if it’s a basement in January, as long as the room warms up and is not too cold, the mud compound can dry easily.

Tell us what you are dealing with and we will give you a straight answer on scope, timing and what drives the cost.
We believe a Level 5 finish is worth paying a little extra for on the right walls. Walls in your entryway, living rooms and hallways where the light hits them will show any imperfections. Closets and rooms that don't have a lot of sunlight hitting them can usually get away with a Level 4 finish.
How long does drywall mud take to dry between coats?
If the contractor is using a premixed compound, the drying time depends on the air in the room. On a warm, dry day, the compound could be dry in roughly 12 hours; on a humid day or in a cold basement, a full day is required. If there are any dark spots, the mud is still wet underneath.
Why do my drywall seams show through the paint?
If you are seeing seams, the seam may not be flat. A raised seam usually casts a shadow in the right lighting, and it needs more finishing, like sanding and another thin coat. A seam that looks flat but has a dull or shiny finish from certain angles usually just needs some primer and a fresh coat of paint.
Can you remove the texture and make my walls smooth?
If you have textured walls, making them smooth can be done with skim coats, for $1.25 to $1.45 a square foot, much cheaper than tearing out and replacing the drywall board at $5.60 to $6.80. If the house was built before 1978, the material needs to be tested first, since about half of the patching compounds sold then contained asbestos.
What finish level do I need for wallpaper?
If you're going to wallpaper a wall or a full room, usually a Level 4 finish is sufficient. There are some heavy-duty vinyl wallpapers that could go over Level 3 because they are thick and don't show any real imperfections. Remember, you should prime the wall first before putting up wallpaper, no matter what level of finish is on it.
Can I hang the drywall myself and hire you to finish it?
Plenty of owners put up their own drywall and then hire a contractor to finish. The screw heads or nail heads must be below the paper but not tearing the paper. Check every sheet as it comes off the truck: tears in the paper or corners and edges banged up will be next to impossible to make look good.
